Beach Blanket Bingo- $10.00/ vehicle

On my way from Los Angeles to San Diego in my rented PT Cruiser (no wonder Chrysler is having troubles)I made a pit stop at San Onofre State Beach Park three miles down I-5 from San Clemente. This was a Tuesday afternoon in the middle of our work week.

My sport coat, starched white shirt, and business attire, combined with my livery, the very "hip" PT Cruiser were completely out of character with the scene on the beach below. I looked like the "Bank Dick", a title WC Fields used for one of his movies. A corporate square in this sea of hipness. Appearances are deceiving, you know. I don't think his term "dick" has the same meaning today.

My mission was to stick my big toe in the Pacific Ocean, just to say I did it, take a leak, and snap a few photos.

The fee to enter the beach, which is down a winding road from atop a hill was $10.00/ vehicle. Reasonable considering the breath-taking scenery, but expensive for this penny pinching "transient" from Texas who just had enough time to visit the lew and snap a few photos. After all, some of us have to work. Or so I thought.

There were 100+ surfers in the water and a half that many on the beach BBQing, hiking, reading, smoking, or just chilling out. A few appeared to be playing "beach banket bingo".

From my distant perch, it appeared as if no one in this crowd had a care in the world. The collective blood pressure reading from the entire assemblage was probably less than mine.

I live vicariously through these bohemians who seem to have not a care in the world. The main concerns of the day appear to be: keeping the dreadlocks properly matted, the tattoos moist, the piercings disinfected/ polished, and the beer cold. Oh and extra wax on the surf board duuuude. If I sound bitter, well I am. They're frolicking in the waves and I'm rushing to a business meeting. What's wrong with this picture?

My lesson? Pull off the highway at a big rest stop w/ fast food and dirty toilets. That way I feel like the king of the hill on a mission from God.

Just kidding of course.... :-) :-)

AHO

Richard

PS- The downside from sitting on the ridge above the Pacific surf was that a flock of sea gulls flew over me and dropped a depth charge about 2 inches from where I was sitting. If the wind was a little stronger it would have landed squarely on my pristine, white shirt, or worse.....

The French Paradox and Resveratrol

Years ago nutritionists stumbled upon an interesting phenomenom they called the "French Paradox". It was recognized that the French ate very fatty, high calorie diets but somehow skipped getting heavy, cardiovascular disease, and had low cancer rates. Red wine in their diet was determined to be at the heart of this paradox. Specifically the compound in red wine called resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a key ingredient in the anti aging compound Vivix that is featured in my book Rich Remedies, Volume 1 and is available here:http://www.shaklee.net/rich/product/21000

A few nights ago, 60 Minutes aired a segment which highlighted the science
(and the scientist) behind Shaklee Corp's most recent product launch, Vivix.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/25/60minutes/main4752082.shtml

As highlighted in the segment, the pharmaceutical industry is 5 years or more
away from having it available in a synthetic form.

But what they didn’t (and couldn’t) tell you is that we have the natural form right now! Check it out.

Peanutbutter (paste) and Salmonella Sandwich

When I was a kid we ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. These days they're serving peanut butter and salmonella. My how times have changed! Actually it's peanut butter paste that has the issue.

Salmonella in peanut butter paste? Is nothing sacred?

This week the processed food industry gifted us with another salmonella outbreak with an American staple, peanut butter paste. The eye of the storm is located in Blakely, Georgia at a peanut paste processing facility. The previous “gifts” from “Uncle Sal” included fresh spinach, green onions, ground beef, melons, and I can’t remember the others right now. There are a bunch.

So far 501 people have been sickened in 43 states from this latest food contamination. Eight people have died from salmonella poisoning. There may be some gross neglect involved on the part of the peanut processor. The FDA investigation continues..... http://www.fda.gov/

So you thought the US Food and Drug Administration were protecting your food? Your drugs?

They have for your convenience listed (after-the- fact) 400 snack bars, cookies, ice-cream, and pet foods voluntarily recalled because of suspected contamination. That’s right, all the things are kids like to eat and even our pets.

I grew up on peanut butter products for creepers sakes.

We all need to take responsibility for our safety and the safety of our loved ones these days when it comes to food. It sounds like I’m preaching again. I don’t preach, I just state the obvious and count on most people to do absolutely nothing with my useful information.

Processed foods are “dead foods” and now we have found them to be "deadly" as well.

Some processed food manufacturers are ignoring public safety in the interests of their financial bottom line. Shame on them (again).

For people who view my pronouncements as alarmist, I may have a few cases of peanut crackers for you......if I can get them out of quarantine. I'll see what I can do.

Eat slow food!

Utah Jazz Owner has both Legs Amputated Below The Knees

Last Saturday morning as I was pulling into Boggy Creek Farm here in Austin to buy my weekly supply of organic produce I heard on the radio that Larry Miller, Owner of the Utah Jazz basketball team had both of his legs amputated on Friday due to complications from type 2 diabetes. The first thing that entered my mind was that:

"here is a financially successful, smart man with significant resources to find and pay for non-invasive, natural remedies for type 2 diabetes and for some reason, the disease got out of hand and took both of his legs".

My Aunt had one of her legs amputated because of type 2 diabetes.

Could this outcome have been prevented? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. Some things happen for a reason and you just have to accept them.

This said, there are practical things you can do to fend off painful outcomes from type 2 diabetes.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." B. Franklin
....or in this case 2 legs.

In my book Rich Remedies, Volume 1 (pp34-39)I discuss the Glycemic Index (GI) diet and the need for all of us to steer our diets towards low GI foods that contain less sugar and eat foods that enable our bodies to metabolize the sugars they have at a slower rate in our bodies.

I have a slight tendency towards diabetes so I am vigilant in the following areas to minimize my chances of advancing to type 2 diabetes:

> Exercise 3 times per week average. Exercise processing glucose in the body.
>Stomach fat- keep the belly fat minimized. Waist line below 40. (I am 36.5 waist) Fat around the stomach for some reason is a precursor to diabetes.
>Low GI foods. I watch what I eat and keep the amount of highly processed foods and sugar to a minimum in my diet
> I eat organic free range bison once per week. It is loaded with coenzyme Q10 which is good for keeping diseases like diabetes in check
> Eat flax seed and take Omega 3 fish oils. The flax seed has Omega 3's and soluable fiber which cleanses the body. The Omega 3's are anti inflamatories.
>Eat magnesium-rich vegetables like Brocoli, spinach, kale and collard greens from organic sources. Magnesium is the most important "dirt mineral there is" See my book for details.
>Drink a minimum of 3 quarts of purified water a day with a small dose of Himalayan rock salt that provides 84 trace minerals.

Does this sound like allot of trouble? Try having your legs amputated!

My point here is that we need to be responsible and conscious about what we put into our bodies (and minds)to avoid some painful medical outcomes. Take responsibility for your health and do a couple simple things to prevent/ minimize future pain.

Health comes before wealth. This needs to be added to the "Law of Attraction". I guess I just did.....

I wish Mr Miller a speedy recovery from his operation.

Keep the Energy

Yesterday was a magical day in America. You could feel the energy in the air as the Obama Inauguration was happening in Washington, DC. Let's keep this positive energy going every day of the year! It's all in our minds so let's just move our dial to the same place (frequency)it was on yesterday. Amp up the collective American consciousness.

As I travelled from Austin through Denver to Seattle yesterday on business, people were abuzz about Obama. Folks were huddled around TV monitors in the airport, Obama tee shirts were being worn, and there was a general atmosphere of hope and celebration that I haven't seen too many times in my life in America. It was invigorating and refreshing. I felt good. I felt happy.

And I didn't vote for Obama! My vote went to John McCain.

But as soon as Obama won the election, I quickly fell in line and am a big supporter of our new President and share the same aspirations as everyone that "this President will be different and will serve the citizens of all persuasions". (The Reverend Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers associations were major turn offs for me, otherwise I would have voted for Obama)

The thing that amazed me most were the throngs of people who packed the Washington Mall. It is estimated that 1.5 million people showed up just to be in the area where Obama was being sworn in. They just wanted to share the moment in the same space.

I attended George Bush 2's Inauguration in 2001 and I can tell you that a fraction of the crowd that Obama had showed up.

It is a huge pain in the keister attending a Presidential Inauguration. We had reviewing stand seats for the 2001 Inauguration, but were not permitted to get anywhere near the area we were authorized to be because we did not show up the obligatory 4 hours early to "assume the position" and get cavity checks. No one told us this, we found out when the cops gave us the "Heisman" at our gate.

Security at a Presidential Inauguration is like nothing you have ever seen: Secret Service, SWAT teams/ snipers on every roof, throngs of DC police officers, FBI agents, US military, armored cars, helicopters, metal detectors, barricades, no fly zones, and a whole host of other security measures. It's mind boggling.

So the energy really has to be good for all those people to inconveniently and uncomfortably cram themselves into that Mall for a few hours in the bitter cold.

Keep the Energy!

Go Obama!

Let's keep the celebration going!

Environmental Toxins and the Case for Cleansing

A few Sundays ago, January 4, 2009, there was an article in the Austin American Statesman newspaper about the coal ash waste problem we have in Texas and other parts of the country at power plants. Disposing of this waste is a huge problem. The most common "solution" is to dump the sludge which contains heavy metals (arsneic, cadmium, mercury, lead etc)and other cancer-causing agents into storage ponds where it can leak into the water table if the pond is not lined with plastic cover or the cover has holes in it. A worse outcome is for the banks of the pond to be breached and the liquid sludge pours into the surrounding environment. This poison ends up in our drinking water and other places.

The reason this issue is mentioned here is that I'm in the middle of writing a chapter on environmental toxins and how you need to be vigilant in making sure that you and your family have some strategy in place for ridding your bodies of everyday toxins which may cause autoimmune diesases and other "inconvenient" side effects.

I'll discuss my strategy in an upcoming blog. The solutions that I will discuss are: Zeolyte, spirulina, chlorella, PC, and clay.

There are ways to keep this stuff from ruining your day (week, month, year, health)

Here's an unfinished chapter that I think I need to share now. The whole story (good nes and bad news) will be in my next book.

“The Recipe for Ill Health”

From Rich Remedies, Volume 2, Copy write 2009.

Here is a partial summary of some of the things that we come in contact with on a day to day basis. We refer to them as the “recipe for ill health”. Mix all of these toxic ingredients together in your body and sickness at some level will result.

I offer this information not to scare you but to enlighten you as to the daily grind that our immune systems are subjected to and then in Part 2 offer a solution that will alleviate some of this immune system workload, ultimately making your life and that of your loved ones much, much more satisfying and enjoyable. So let’s start with the bitter medicine first.

Municipal Water Fluoridation and Chlorination Health Risks

Fluoride and Chlorine in water were recognized 40 years ago as lethal toxins when evidence was presented to the US Congress . Lobbyists for the chemical industry over turned any momentum in favor of protecting citizens in favor of profits. This is a common practice when money and political power join foreces.

Forty plus years later, these poisons are still being injected into our water supply today, exposing us to cancer and disease- causing agents.
Fluoride- is added to certain community drinking supplies as a chemical to protect people teeth from tooth decay. The effectiveness of fluoride to provide health benefits is dubious and in fact, evidence shows that it is extremely harmful to people and pets.
A study commissioned by the US Congress in February 1989 on fluoride in drinking water by the Batelle Memorial Institute showed that the incidence of oral cancers in fluoridated cities vs non-fluoridated cities was 33 to 50% greater in the fluoridated water consumers. A consumer health advocacy organization, the Fluoride Action Networks has catalogued a series of medical research studies that show that fluoride plays a role in allergies, bone disease, brain disease, cancer, dental fluorosis, pineal gland disorders, thyroid, tooth decay, and kidney disease. See www.fluoridealert.org
In 2008, the National Kidney Foundation released a bulletin suggesting that patients with chronic kidney conditions be warned of the presence of fluoride in their drinking water based on the overwhelming evidence that fluoride is a dangerous carcinogen and impairs kidney function. The NKF was long a supporter of the National Dental Association, a fluoride proponent ,until the evidence became so overwhelming that they had to warn kidney patients of the dangers of fluoride.
Many of the US community water systems continue to inject fluoride into drinking water.

Chlorine- is regularly added to community drinking water supplies to kill off bacteria and other harmful organisms. The problem with chlorine as I found out from a letter from my community water provider here in Austin, Texas is that it combines with organic compounds and forms a highly cancerous substances called trihalomethanes (THM’s). Studies show that THM’s cause cancer in the livers and kidnetys of mice. Studies also show that exposure to chlorine, a highly toxic chemical on it’s own increases the risks of kidney, rectal, and bladder cancer.
Rich Remedies, Volume 1 p161.

There are water filters that remove chlorine and fluoride that can substantially reduce the exposure to these chemicals in the home. Reverse osmosis and distillation treatment systems are also effective in removing chlorine an fluoride but they change the structure of “life” in the water. These types of water cannot be found anywhere in nature. They do remove chlorine and fluoride but they are acidic and in the case of distilled water, it leaches minerals from the body.

Food- based toxins

Food and Beverage containers- Bisphenol A. (BPA) can be found just about everywhere in your local grocery market including: some cans of baby formula, canned foods, and plastic bottles made with polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. BPA mimix the sex horimone estradol and is linked to serious disorders such as prostate cancer, breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease, early puberty, obesity and learning / behavioral problems. Artificial horimone stimulants are notorious cancer/ disease causing agents and when present accelerate the spread of cancers. (check this last statement)
BPA can be found in the bloodstream of 90% of the US population.

BPA was found in over half of food and beverage containers sampled. It’s everywhere.

The US FDA and EPA consider BPA “safe” for consumers but Canada has labeled it a toxic chemical.

Who do you believe? This is said to be a $6 billion per year business. It’s not going away anytime soon.

Source: Scientists & Engineers for America Action Fund

Aspartame- Artificial sweetener found in diet soda pop, diet sweets, chewing gum, and other items that offer the promise of low calorie content.
When metabolized in the body, aspartame turns into methanol, formaldehyde, and formic acid (fire ant venom) . Aspartame has a cumulative effect, building up an accumulating in your body tissue. Side effects from this chemical include anxiety, seizures, depression, headaches, insomnia, and in the worst cases rectal and brain tumors. This chemical is in a category of foods that contain “excitoxins” that accelerate the spread and development of chroniuc illnesses in the body.See 321recipes.com for over 50 articles on the effects of aspartame.

Food Dyes/ Artificial Colorings- Candies, soda pop, and anything with fake colors. Red #3, Green#3, Blue #3, yellow#6. These colors are petroleum derived and in large doses cause cancer, Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder (ADHD) in children has been linked to these dyes. Over a long time, if you consume artificial colorings in large quantities, illness will result. Think about all the sweet things we’ve eaten that have these colors in them with our children. Think of the sports drinks that we thik we are deriving health from. Think again. Check out www.adhddiet.org

Pesticides- dioxin, Dichlorobenzene, gamma-Hexachlorocyclohexane, Methoxychlor, Pentachloronitrobenzene, Phenol, Cyanide, and many others. Sprayed on fruits and vegetables that are t grown conventionally. The chemicals mentioned above are all cancer and autoimmune disease causing agents.

Sodium Nitrite- Processed meats- bacon, ham. Hot dogs, lunchmeats, and corned beef. These mix in the stomach to form nitrosamines, a carcinogen linked to cancer in the bladder, brain, and pancreas.

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)- It is found in some, chips, salad dressings, canned soups, frozen dinners, fast foods, and many processed foods include MSG as a flavor enhancer. It will show up on labels as a variety of different , harmless sounding things such as: yeast extract, gelatin, calcium caseinate, and sodium caseinate. It causes allergic reactions in some people, can trigger migranes, and can effect the nervous system. The worst side effect is that according to Dr. Russell Blalock, M.D. it accelerates the growth of cancer cells in patients with cancer. It is in a class of food additives called excitoxins. http://www.naturalnews.com.com/020550

Trans Fats - Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils or saturated fats. Hydrogen is added to vegetable oil to increase shelf life in foods. This causes the oil to solidify at room temperature. It also solidifies in your body.
“Scientific evidence shows that consumption of saturated fat, trans fat, and dietary cholesterol raises low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad cholesterol," levels, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, more than 12.5 million Americans have CHD, and more than 500,000 die each year. That makes CHD one of the leading causes of death in the United States.
The Food and Drug Administration has required that saturated fat and dietary cholesterol be listed on food labels since 1993. Starting Jan.1, 2006, listing of trans fat will be required as well. With trans fat added to the Nutrition Facts panel, required by Jan. 1, 2006, you will know for the first time how much of all three--saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol--are in the foods you choose. Identifying saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol on the food label gives you information you need to make food choices that help reduce the risk of CHD. This revised label will be of particular interest to people concerned about high blood cholesterol and heart disease.”
Crackers, potatoe chips, cookies, snack food, shortening, fried foods, margarines, and other foods processed with hydrogenated oils are potentially dangerous if consumed in large quantities over time. Many of these “comfort foods” are mainstays of the Standard American Diet (SAD).

Some scientists believe that trans fats are the most harmful food additive to the human body because they raise LDL cholesterol and are contained in so many foods and when they accumulate, solidify in your blood vessels causing blockages.

The purpose is to educate, not alarm. There are solutions to offsetting some of these
effects that will be discussed later.

Knowledge is power.

A Chapter from My Book on Nutrition & Internet Marketing

Last week I signed up for a sevicee from Internet Marketing Guru Pat O'Bryan and his son Patrick called "Artices Everywhere". The new hot idea for driving web traffic is to publish articles to the web. Here is my second article which is an extract from my book. My only New Years resolution (which I am keeping as witnessed here) is to learn Internet Marketing and drive business to my website:
www.richremedies.com
I will let you know how it works next month.

A Useful Vitamins & Supplements Basic Overview
(Extract from Rich Remedies, Volume 1, My Amazing Natural Self Healing Discoveries by Richard Tyson, Copy write 2008)

Nutrition is an individual thing like all healing. You need different vitamins and minerals at different times in your life. There are a few global recommendations that can be made for everyone, but it’s mostly an individual thing. That is why nutritionists have a job.

Here’s the truth according to me: If you have access to, and can eat locally grown, natural, organic vegetables, fruits, grains, and meats, you require a minimal amount of vitamin and mineral supplementation. All you need is contained in the fresh healthy food that you eat. However, if you are a vegetarian, you’ll probably need supplementation to make up for the vitamins you’re missing from animal protein, such as vitamin B12 and Coenzyme Q10.

In Austin, Texas we are blessed with a 12-month growing season and four farmers’ markets within a 30 minute drive of my house that support organic or chemical-free farming. They call this “slow food.” (This is food raised the old-fashioned way before the industrialization of farming and mass production. There are no pesticides or chemical fertilizers, antibiotics and growth hormones used.) Local food is not shipped long distances or stored for any length of time so it retains its nutritional value. Also, since it is local, it helps me eat according to the season and consume food that is part of my local environment which is in keeping with macrobiotics and other natural schools of living.

I am a big fan of this way of eating and a dedicated practitioner. Come over to my house on any given weekend and I will knock your socks off with locally grown, minimally processed, fresh, well-cooked or raw foods, while we drink some good beer or wine and maybe enjoy a good cigar.

This abundance of locally grown, natural foods is a blessing that most people in America do not have. When I travel outside of Austin, which is frequently, I take vitamin and mineral supplements. The food served in most restaurants is commercially grown and missing a lot of its nutrients because of the way it was grown, transported, stored, and processed.

There are three general categories of vitamin production: synthetic, extracts, and natural.
Synthetic vitamins, as the name suggests, are man-made in a test tube with inorganic substances not easily absorbed by the body and can have harmful side effects.
Extracts are not much better than synthetics in that they typically consist of 10% or less natural ingredients, contain very few enzymes, have harsh fillers, and use low quality raw materials.
Natural vitamins use natural sources for their ingredients, such as fruits and vegetables, have natural enzymes, and are easily absorbed by the body. The key factor that favors natural vitamins is that they are bio available. This means that your body recognizes the vitamins/ nutrients you are taking and is capable of absorbing them at the cellular level. You can not fool nature (your body) with man-made, artificial substitutes.

You are better off not taking any vitamins if they are synthetic or as extracts as they are toxic. You might as well chew on plastic. Get naturally derived vitamins or skip them all together.

Before you start taking supplements, you should consult a qualified nutritionist to pinpoint exactly what it is that your body needs. The Asyra 3 bio-energetic health screening system, discussed in Chapter 11 of my book, is a great way to find this out.

Even though I sell vitamins and supplements, I strongly suggest you know what you need so you don’t waste your money on things that will just pass through your system providing no nutritional benefit. I’d like you to buy my vitamins only if you really need them and will benefit from them. Otherwise, hold onto your money.

Here is my personal Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements list1

*Taken daily, your supplements will be different than mine based on the recommendations of your healing coach.

The vitamins and supplements above are my personal preference. You will need to find the combination that works for you and your present state of wellness.

Many people in the United States, even over-weight people, suffer from some type of malnutrition because the fast food and junk food they consume contains “empty” calories. Their excess weight is due to a lack of good nutrition, not an excess of nutrition as one would imagine. An aid to weight loss and wellness should include the use of vitamins and supplements, as appropriate and under the guidance of a nutritionist, as well as diet modification. Not many people eat as conscientiously as I do, so more vitamins and minerals may be appropriate.

A good wide spectrum multivitamin is the easiest way to cover the bases. Make sure though that the supplement is naturally derived from vegetables and fruits and has more than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of key nutrients. (Note that you don’t see a multivitamin on my list. This is because I have a nutritionist-guided dietary program and an awareness of what I need.) Most people I know require a multivitamin, in addition to other supplements, in order to get all of the nutrition they need. I do occasionally take a multivitamin, but it is based on nutritional recommendations from a professional healing coach.

If you are taking medication, always check for counter-interactions between the medicine and the supplement. Some counteract each other and, in rare cases, are actually toxic in combination, so it is a good idea to check with your physician before taking any form of supplement.

Examples:

Vitamin E should not be taken while on a blood clotting medication. Vitamin E has natural blood anticoagulation (thinning) properties that will actually interact negatively with blood clotting medications.

Acidophilus binds with antibiotics so it is good to take them before and after a course of antibiotics but not during antibiotic treatment. I have gotten conflicting opinions on this one, but I believe for me they work best before and after. Check with your healing coach.

The supplements that I use frequently fit my needs best (magnesium, omega-3, and vitamin C) have anti-inflammatory properties that are good for managing my allergies.

Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics

These two became a part of my regimen when I learned of their importance during cleansing therapies. Proper “bowel care” is essential to your health I discovered.
Many diseases (70% +) originate in your bowel (in addition to your mind) and can be best addressed there. Proper digestion, especially of animal products, is aided by digestive enzymes which help with the assimilation and eventual elimination of food. In the bowel. Probiotics maintain healthful bacteria, keeping molds and other micro toxins in check. There is a battle going on between “good bacteria and “bad bacteria” all the time. Populating your digestive tract with probiotics gives you an advantage in fighting off bacteria that cause sickness. This is a very, very important supplement. Most diseases start in the gut. Proper gut health is paramount.

Before taking any supplements, you should have a blood analysis, hair analysis, and urine analysis or, as I have discovered, a Bio-Energetic Health Screening. Otherwise you’re guessing. A trained professional can determine some of the telltale symptoms of a mineral or vitamin deficiency by just listening to a patient’s health issues; like they do on radio health talk shows. This takes years of clinical experience and is still, to some degree, guess work. If you really want to know what you need, get tested. Bio-Energetic Health Screening is now my preferred method. Informed nutrition is good nutrition and it will save you money in the long run.

Zen and the Art of the Goose Hunt

My sons Christian and Scott (first photo) and I went on our first goose hunting trip last weekend in Eagle Lake Texas.

We had a blast. No pun intended.

We were part of a larger group that included 8 high schoolers and 9 adults. The hunt was in Texas rice country at Waterfowl Outfitters Unlimited.

If you haven't goose hunted, it requires silence, stillness, patience, and a bit of luck. You need to take on a Zen-like persona to bag a goose. They are pretty smart and very aware of sounds and movement. If you make noise and move around, you're doomed. They won't come in close enough to be in range to get off a clean shot.

The hunt started with a 4:15AM wake up call. Everyone got dressed and jumped into our trucks which were loaded with shotguns and shells the night before.

Hunting guides came by the lodge with retriever dogs, decoys, and white tunics to make us look like snow geese in the field.

Our group drove in the pitch black darkness for 30 minutes to remote wheat pastures where the geese will be feeding during the day.

Once in the pasture, the first task is to set up the goose decoys. The ones we were using were basically white plastic trash bags with a thin, black streak painted on them and a wooden rod running through the center to anchor them into the pasture. A section of field 20 feet by 80 feet was filled with decoys spaced 3 feet apart.
(photos 2 and 3) When the wind blows, the plastic bags fill up with air and from a distance do look remarkably similar to real snow geese.

After the decoys were in place, we were instructed to lie down 10 feet apart with our shot guns in the middle of the decoys and to lie still and blend in.

Daylight arrived at 7:15AM. The guide told everyone to be still and quiet.

He would begin calling the geese in as soon as flocks would come flying over head in proximity to our pasture.

The flocks started to arrive around 7:30AM. At the same time, black clouds could be seen in the distance. A cold front was blowing in from the East. By 8:00AM, the wind kicked up to 25 miles per hour and the air temperature fell by 25 degrees from the 70's to the 50's. The whole complexion of our day changed in less than an hour. Half of the decoys blew over and had to be reset.

The falling temperatures and high winds had us moving from t-shirts to hooded camouflaged parkas within minutes.

We got conflicting messages from our guide as to the advantages/ disadvantages of the high winds and colder temperatures for hunting. He said that the geese would be flying lower and more likely to want to land due to the difficulty flying against the wind.

After lying on their backs for 30 minutes, the high school boys got impatient and lost their collective "Zen". They started getting up, walking around and horsing around with each other. The movement and noise was scaring off our feathered quarry.

I lied still in my spot on the ground as long as I could. Finally I became indignant at the "rabble rousing" boys and told them to lie down and shut the fx@# up. Very un-Zen of me to get upset but I was lying in that cold wheat field in goose shit on my back getting colder by the minute and sensing that no geese with half a pea-sized brain were going to come within range of our field, given all the cacophony.

The boys did settle down long enough for a single flock of geese to fly over. We bagged a single bird from this group. That was it.

The rest of the morning flocks of geese would approach and then change direction just as they were getting within range of our noisy, moving, and clearly visible hunting party.

After an hour and a half of this, I reconciled myself to the fact that the single goose (photo 4) was going to be the catch of the day. No sense getting upset, the boys were having fun and nothing I was going to say was going to change things. Might as well extract some enjoyment out of just lying in a wheat field.

Silence, stillness, and patience are not part of Texas teen aged boy's make up. They'll need to learn the Zen and the Art of the Goose hunt some other day.
And.....I will need to just be with what ever happens and be happy.

PS- I was annoyed that I spent $700.00+ to hunt geese and none would come into our field because all the activity was spooking them. My 700 greenbacks took wing just like the snow geese. They greenbacks and the geese were energetically aligned to escape me.

PS PS- Eagles beat the Giants as I predicted 23-11.....on to the playoffs next week against the Cardinals in Phoenix.

Do you want to live past the age of 100?

Living Past the Age of 100 ? Here are a couple of stories.

Dr. Alex Carrel, M.D., a Nobel Prize winning physician proved that you could keep heart cells from a chicken embryo alive almost indefinitely if the solution they are in is clean and they are fed the proper nutrition. The concept is basically that the quality of the “energy” in a cell’s environment will dictate how long it will live. He kept chicken embyo heart cells alive for 29 years in his laboratory until a nurse forgot to change the nutrient base the cells were living in. This is a really long time for a chicken embyo heart cell!

So what does this have to do with human life span? It has some relevance as I discuss in my book, "Rich Remeidies, Volume 1", Chapter 8, but not much to this blog post....I just like telling it....:-)

I will share two stories that resonate with me on longevity.

Genetics certainly plays a role in our lifespan, but our blood lines and heritage are just one aspect of the total picture. There are a combination of factors that I believe lead to longevity.

I just finished the book “The Blue Zone” , Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who Have Lived the Longest by Dan Buettner(1). The information in his book was made into a National Geographic TV show a few years back. You should get the book to read the whole story. It’s pretty interesting.

According to Buettner, there are four areas: Nicoya , Costa Rica, Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and Loma Linda, California, USA where a disproportionate number of the population lives past the 100 year mark.

Some of the factors that contribute to longevity are “common sense”( which I found is quite uncommon and in short supply these days):

• Strong family and community bonds exist in all of these groups. A sense of purpose pervades their lives.

• There is a Spiritual, faith-based component amongst all people. There is a belief in something bigger than themselves.

• Natural, plant-based foods represent the majority of their diets. Very little if any manufactured foods are consumed in these communities.

• Moderate exercise or manual labor is part of the daily regimen.

• All have a connection with nature and get regular doses of unprotected sun exposure (Vitamin D).

• Stress levels are very low. People in these groups do not get excited or aggressive very often. They keep their cool.

• Moderate to no drinking / tobacco use (although some in these populations do partake with no ill effects).

This is just a short summary of some of the common factors that resonated with me. Check the book out for all the details.

Another, similar perspective comes from Dr. Joel Wallach who wrote “Rare Earth’s Forbidden Cures” and was the distributor of the ubiquitous audio tape in the early 1990’s called “Dead Doctors Don’t Lie” (2).

In Wallach’s observations, there are five (5) areas in the world (different from Buettner’s) where the populations also have a larger than average number of people living past the age of 100.

They are mountainous regions. Vilcambas, Ecuador, the Hunzas in Pakistan (on the China border), Tibetans of Northeast China, the Russian Caucus Mountains (Georgia), and the Titicacas area of Peru.

What are the common threads of vitality that lead to longevity amongst this group?

The list of factors is very similar to the “Blue Zones” except that there is one key component that seems to super charge people’s health in these areas- “glacial milk”.

Glacial milk is the mineral-rich water that comes from high altitude glacial snow melt. The water that runs through these areas has a cloudy appearance like milk due to its high mineral content. These minerals are in ionic / colloidal form, meaning that they posses a life-giving electrical charge (Ki, Qi, or Chi) and have particle sizes that are very, very small so they can be readily absorbed by the body’s cells as nourishment.

Two time Nobel prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling stated:
“Every ailment, every sickness, and every disease can be traced back to an organic trace mineral deficiency.”

These folks consuming glacial milk are getting a daily dose of all the mineralas that their bodies need to be healthy.

So, I think there is some truth to the “glacial milk” story, although health and longevity include allot of other factors that include mental and spiritual factors as listed above.

I will be publishing a future blog on the easiest way for us city dwellers to consume these same ionic / colloidal minerals in a very convenient and natural way.

The conclusion that I draw from all this is- “Health and longevity are not complicated” Many of us can live past the age of 100 if we follow these basic guidelines:

• Care about someone besides yourself
• Make family a priority
• Treat other people as you wish to be treated
• Have some Spiritual foundation (no matter what it is)
• Eat a majority of your diet as fresh, chemical- free veggies
• Consume mineral-rich foods. Avoid junk foods. Be conscious of what you put into your body.
• Be optimistic/ happy/ gracious
• Drink plenty of pure water and get an adequate supply of the Earth's 84 essential minerals (covered in an upcoming blog)
• Have a good time and don’t worry about things
• Drink and imbibe in moderation (everything in moderation, including moderation)

Pretty simple, isn’t it?

This is my two cents for the week……

PS- This is all covered in some way in my book, Rich Remedies, Volume 1.

PS PS- Longevity is not the goal, quality of life is. If you happen to aspire to a long life and are not “taken out” by some misfortune or accident, there are ways to accomplish this objective.

PS PS PS- Prediction: Eagles best Giants 27 to 21 in the NFC Playoffs on Sunday. Go on to win the Super Bowl.

2009 is here?

Happy New Year!

The year 2009 is going to be a great year. Peace and happiness to everyone!

I just put my Christmas tree on the curb. Is this the correct time?

Jay Leno"s set still has Christmas decorations ....should I have kept my tree up? Whoops, too late. It's on the curb.

The tree pictured here is next to the canal path on Main Street, Manayunk section, Philadelphia, Pa. When will they (Philadelphia Streets Dept.) take these tree decorations down?

Keep those decorations up.

We need to celebrate Christmas at least until mid-January "St. Nick's Day"

Please put a bag of flax seeds and a pint of Guinness in my St. Nick's Day stocking for delivery by January 16th.

Thank you God.

Happy New New Year!
